皆様：

「こころ」は月に一度、東日本大震災を振り返り、沢山の亡くなった方々のご冥福をお祈りすると共に、皆で力を合わせてこの苦難を乗り越えていけるよう、祈りを捧げる会です。

この震災は、「誰か」に起こったことではありません。私たち一人一人に起こったことだと思います。

今月の時間帯はＮＹ時間12月10日（月）午後10時＜日本時間11日（火）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げますが、時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日 に共に祈りを捧げましょう。 

先日、マンハッタン国際映画祭で『祈り～サムシンググレートとの対話～』（http://www.inori-2012.sakura.ne.jp/）という映画を見ました。

この映画は、筑波大学名誉教授、分子生物学者の村上和雄氏のドキュメンタリー映画です。

ＤＮＡ研究の権威でもある村上教授は、欧米の科学者達と共に「祈り」がいかに人の遺伝子に影響を与えるのかを科学の視点で徹底的に調べたのでした。

人は自分のことを誰かが「祈ってくれている」と知ると、「プラシーボ効果」が働き、病が快方に向かうことがあることは前々から知られています。

そこで科学者達は、プラシーボ効果ではない「祈り」の力を調査するべく、対象の人たちに「祈っている」ことを隠して研究を進めました。

アメリカ東海岸に住む何百人もの人が、西海岸の病人のために祈る実験を行い、その結果、プラシーボ効果を超えた成果が出たのでした。

「祈り」の力は現在も議論されていますが、ハーバード大やコロンビア大などが「精神神経免疫学」の名の下に研究をしており、今や最先端の研究分野になりつつあります。

「祈り」を科学することについては、様々な議論が出てくることと思います。

しかしながら、村上教授が指摘するように、「祈り」に何らかの波動があり、その祈りの対象により良い影響を与えるとすれば、

私たちは今、あらゆる宗教などを越えた「祈り」について、見直すときを迎えているのかも知れません。

村上教授は、映画の中で311を振り返り、こう締めくくります。

「人は、無力だから祈るのではなく、祈りには思いもよらない力があるから祈るのです。」

Dear All:

"KOKORO"is a group that looks back on the Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11th, 2011) and holds a circle of prayer every month to pray for the victims and their families. We believe that the disaster did not happen to only some of us but to all of us. On Monday December 11th at 10pm New York Time (Tuesday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan), let us all take a moment to pray together, so that we can overcome the effects of the disaster and move forward.

Recently, I had the opportunity to see "INORI: Prayer-Conversation with Something Great" at the Manhattan International Film Festival.

This is a documentary film about Dr. Kazuo Murakami, a professor of applied Biochemistry at Tsukuba University in Japan.

Dr. Murakami who is also an expert in DNA studies, explores the impact of "Inori" (a prayer) scientifically on human DNA, with the cooperation of US and European scientists.

It is a known fact that when a sick person is informed that someone is praying for him/her to recover, a placebo effect takes place and the illness may be cured. Therefore, an experiment was done on the effect of "Inori" and several hundred people on the east coast were asked to pray for a sick person living on the west coast. That person was not told of the experiment but as a result, an effect that surpassed the placebo effect became evident.

The power of "Inori" is still under discussion, but universities such as Harvard and Columbia are doing research under the name of psycho-neuroimmunology and this study is about to become a leading-edge study.

There are bound to be controversies in treating "Inori" scientifically, but as Dr. Murakami points out, if "Inori"carries some kind of wave motion, and if it really does bring about good effects, then this may be the best time for us to reexamine the power of "Inori”which surpasses any kind of religion.

In the film, Dr. Murakami looks back at 3.11 and concludes that,

"People pray, not because they are helpless, but because they know that there is unpredictable power in a prayer"

「この子に安全な食事を与えたい。」
震災後、気仙沼の荒れ放題の田畑を見て、立ち上がった一人の女性がいました。まだ幼い息子さんのお母さんでもある、佐藤春佳さんです。
震災当時、1歳10ヶ月だった息子さんを抱いて、被災した自宅から非難したそうです。
普段、私たちが当たり前のように摂取している食料ですが、震災後の食糧難を通じ、佐藤さんは食べ物の大切さを実感します。
「いただきます」と言って食べてはいるけれど、震災を通じて、その本当の意味を考えるようになりました。
現在、彼女は沢山の仲間たちと共に、耕作放棄地を耕し、そこで野菜を育て、その野菜を使った惣菜、弁当、加工品などの販売を行うために取り組んでいます。
放射能の問題にも目を向け、しっかりと放射能測定を行い、数値なども表示し、皆が安心して食生活を送れるよう、最善の努力をしています。
何をもって「安全」なのか。その答えは多種多様ですが、彼女たちは、誰かや何かに頼るのではなく、自分たちの目で確かめ、自分たちで生活を守っていこうと決めました。
農作物の植え付けから加工まで、全てを一貫して行うことで、お客様は勿論、一緒に働く人たちやその家族の方とも、食べ物と環境の深い関わりを考えていきたい。そんな気持ちを大切に、これからも活動を続けます。
「被災地の現状を伝えていくことが本当の復興に繋がるのではないか。」と、彼女は自分自身にできることを今日も模索しています。
彼女はこう続けました。
「現在、通常に戻りつつあるかのように見えますが、全く復興にはほど遠いと思います。
まだまだ、たくさんの支援を必要としている人がいるのに、市民の声に耳を傾けようとしない体制。
耳を傾けず、強いものの意見だけを聞く体制は、変えなくてはいけない。
市も県も国も、まずは弱い立場の意見を聞かないと復興なんて無理だと思います。弱い立場の人の方がはるかに多いのだから。」
被災地の真の声に耳を傾けながら、私たちも自分たちにできることを模索していきたいと思います。

"I want to provide safe food for this child"
A woman stood up when she saw the ruined fields and rice paddies of Kesennuma after the 3.11 earthquake. She is Haruka Sato, a mother of a year and 10 months old son. Right after the earthquake, she evacuated from her affected house carrying her son in her arms.
We tend to take food for granted, but after the disaster, Ms. Sato said that she realized the real value of food. Before we eat, we say "Itadakimasu,"(a word Japanese people say, meaning "we are grateful for the food we eat") but after experiencing food shortages after the earthquake, Ms. Sato started to think about the true meaning of the word.
Presently she is cultivating the abandoned farm fields and growing vegetables with her friends. In the near future, they plan to sell "bento" (lunch boxes) and take away food using the vegetables that they grew.
They address radiation concerns and intend to measure the level of radiation to display the data on their products; they are doing whatever they can to produce food that people can feel safe to eat.
What is meant by "safe" food? The answer to the question varies, but Ms. Sato and her friends are determined not to rely on other people but to take matters into their own hands in order to protect their lives.
By getting involved with the whole process, starting with planting crops, harvesting and processing, she would like to think about the relationship between food and the environment not only getting the opinions of consumers, but also of her colleagues and their families.
"I believe that relating the present condition of the affected areas to the outside world is the key to real recovery," says Ms. Sato. Even today, she is searching for things she could do to help with the reconstruction. "Presently, it looks as if everything is getting back to normal, but in reality that is far from the truth. There are many people in need of support and yet the system of our country does not listen to public opinion. A system that only listens to those with power needs to be changed. The real reconstruction for the towns, the prefecture, the country is impossible without listening to the people in vulnerable positions. By listening to the voices of the people from the disaster areas, we would like to continue our support anyway we can.

東日本大震災の発生から一年7ヶ月が過ぎた今も、被災地での行方不明者は2800人以上に及びます。
震災から数ヶ月後には、遺体は殆ど陸上からは見付からず、海から発見されているのが実情です。
しかしながら、月日の流れと共に行政による捜索は縮小されてしまいました。
それでも、大切な人の帰りを待ちわびる家族の気持ちに変わりはありません。
そんな今も、暗い海底で行方不明者の捜索や瓦礫の撤去作業を黙々と続けている人たちがいます。
ボランティアダイバーたちです。
海底には防波堤の残骸や鉄骨、壊れた家屋や木材などの瓦礫が散乱しており、特にヘドロなどで視界が遮られている場所での捜索活動は、
プロのダイバーにとっても決して安全なものではありません。
それでも、遺体が見付からない遺族の悲痛な思いに応えるために、彼らは今日も潜り続けます。
海底のどこかに家族がいる。愛する人が眠っている。
一人でも多くの人を、待っている家族の元に返してあげたい…。
そんな気持ちが彼らを動かしています。
そして、こうした捜索自体が遺族の心の救いにもなっています。
「何か手がかりがあれば…。こうして捜索して頂くことで、心の整理につながっているんです。」
海に向かってそっと手を合わす遺族の方たちにとって、震災は、決して「過去」にはなっていません。

亡くなられた方々のご冥福をお祈りすると共に、一人でも多くの人が家族の元に帰れるように、
そして、今も尚捜索にあたるダイバーたちに感謝を込めて、彼らの安全を皆で祈りたいと思います。

Dear All:

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once every month with people from all over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan.
On Wednesday October 10th at 11pm New York time (Thursday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan), we ask you to join us.

It has been a year and 7 months since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the number of people that are still missing is close to 2800.
Several months after the quake, the bodies of the deceased were no longer found on land only in the ocean.
With the passage of time, the search is being cut down more and more, but nothing has changed for the families who are still waiting for their loved ones to come home.
In the midst of that, there are people who continue to search for the bodies or remove the wreckage from the bottom of the dark ocean that is full of the debris of breakwaters, steel, dismantled houses, planks and rubbles.
They are the volunteer divers. Because of the sludge, the visibility is extremely bad and the ocean is full of danger even for the experienced divers.
Even so, they continue their search, hoping that they can console the anguish of the families who are looking for the bodies of the beloved.
A family member may still be somewhere in the ocean.
The loved one may be at the bottom of the sea.
To recover and return as many bodies as possible to their families, is what propels the divers to go into the waters.
The activity itself gives great comfort to the bereaved.
"If we could at least find a lead..the divers' search helps us to sort out our feelings"
In silence, the bereaved put their hands together towards the ocean. To these people, the disaster of the earthquake is never a thing of the past.

This month, let us all pray for the deceased, that they be returned to their families as soon as possible.
Also, we would like to dedicate our prayer to these volunteer divers with our deepest respect and gratitude, hoping for their safety.

先日、福島第１原発で作業していた57歳の男性が心拍停止となり、搬送先の病院で死亡が確認されました。
猛暑の中、全面マスクと防護服を着用し、他の作業員たちと共に汚染水貯水タンクの増設に従事していました。
死因は、急性心筋梗塞でした。
原発事故後、死亡した作業員は5人となりました。

炎天下における外気温が30度とすると、作業員の体感温度は50度に達するそうです。
屋外現場には、日陰は殆どありません。
そしてありえないような放射線量の高さの中で、作業員たちは黙々と作業を続けます。
それだけの作業を続けているのに、敷地内の線量が高すぎてメディアが入られず、
私たちの元には、彼らの情報は殆ど入ってきません。それが現状です。

作業員たちは言います。
「誰かがやらなくちゃいけない。だったらその誰かになればいいんじゃないのって。」（31歳）
「（福島に）娘のお墓があるんですよ。家族はみんな避難させたけれど、俺だけは残ろうって。」（39歳）
「若い人は、これから結婚して子供を作るんだから、やっぱり私らの年齢の人が頑張んないと駄目ですよ。」(55歳）
「家族を養っていかなくちゃいけないですよね。現状では雇用は原発しかない。」（46歳）

原発で作業を続ける理由は様々です。
でも、私たちの当たり前のような毎日の生活は、そんな彼らによって守られています。
今彼らがいなくなったら、原発問題の収束はありえません。

過酷な環境の中で、毎日およそ3000人の作業員が原発収束のために戦っています。
今月は、そんな作業員の方々に深い感謝と敬意を込めて、祈りを捧げたいと思います。

Dear All:

“Kokoro” is a circle of prayer which started to keep the memory of the March 11th Great East Japan Earthquake and its victims forever in our hearts. Every month, we ask people all over the world to join us in our prayer: September 10th at 11pm New York time (September 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan).

A 57-year old worker at Fukushima 1 Nuclear Power Plant recently suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest and was taken to a hospital in Iwaki City by ambulance, and was later pronounced dead. He was engaged in building additional storage tanks to hold water contaminated with radiation. During the construction of these tanks, laboring in intense heat, with all workers wearing full face mask and protective gear, he suffered an acute myocardial infarction. He is the fifth person to have died working at the plant since the nuclear crisis of March 11th.

It is said that under scorching heat, if the outside temperature is around 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), the feeling temperature of the workers could well reach 122 degrees (50 degrees). There is hardly any shade in the outdoor field. The workers continue to work under unbelievably high radiation level. Since the level of radiation exposure on the premise is so high, the Japanese media cannot enter the grounds and the information of their activities has been scarce; this is the reality.

The workers comments:
"Someone has to do it. Then why not be that someone" (31-year old)
"My daughter's grave is there (in Fukushima). I let my family evacuate, but I've decided to stay" (39-year old)
"Young people will get married and have kids, so it's up to our generation to keep working" (55-year old)
"I have to support my family and, at present the only employment available is at the nuclear plant" (46-year old)

The reasons for working at the nuclear plant vary. However, our normal daily lives are being protected by these workers. Without them, the end of the nuclear crisis is impossible.

Every day, under such severe conditions, approximately 3000 workers are risking their lives in restoring the nuclear plant.
This month, KOKORO would like to give prayers to these workers with respect and with our deepest gratitude.

「こころ」8月： 東日本大震災 －共に祈りを捧げまし ょう －Kokoro (August): Japan earthquake and tunami -Let's pray for Japan- 2012/08/05 (日) 23:16

皆様：

「こころ」は、東日本大震災を風化させたくない、亡くなった方々のことを忘れたくない、そんな思いで始まったお祈りの会です。月に一度、日本国内と海外にも呼びかけて、被災者の方々と共に祈りを捧げています。今月はＮＹ時間8月10日（金）午後11時＜日本時間11日（土）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。 どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。

お日様に向かって元気イッパイに笑顔を咲かせるひまわりの花。
そんなひまわりの花を見ているだけで、こちらまで元気になれます。
東北に、そして日本中に元気を届けたいと、
ひまわり畑で有名な岡山県笠岡市のグループが立ち上がりました。

「私たちは震災を忘れない。遠く離れていても、できることは必ずある。
ひまわりの花に復興への願いを込めて、この笠岡から発信しよう。」
種を配り、その種が各地で花を咲かせ、その花から再び種を受け取り、そしてまた別のどこかで花を咲かせます。
配られる種には、ひまわりの花言葉が添えられています。

「いつも あなたを 見ています。」 ―東北を思う気持ちが、そこには詰まっています。
そんなひまわりの花のリレーは、この一年半を通じ、東北に、そして全国に広がりました。
そして、賛同者が後を絶たないこの活動は、遂にアメリカネバダ州でひまわりの種を宇宙に飛ばす一大プロジェクトへと発展しました。
子供たちによって、ひまわりの種がピンポン玉に詰められました。
そしてピンポン玉には、皆のメッセージが書かれてありました。
こうして、ひまわりの種と皆の思いが詰まったボールは、気球によって高度30キロの成層圏まで運ばれたのでした。

種を乗せた気球が宇宙を旅する映像を見て、東北の子供たち、そして親御さんからは歓声が上がったそうです。
「その時のみんなの笑顔を、僕たちは決して忘れません。」
プロジェクトのメンバーたちの笑顔も、ひまわりに負けないぐらい飛び切りのものでした。

宇宙を旅したひまわりの種は、この夏、福島でも花を咲かせます。
成層圏の厳しい環境を潜り抜けた種は、復興を応援する皆の思いを精一杯咲かせることでしょう。

今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間8月10日（金）午後11時＜日本時間11日（土）正午＞です。
東北に元気を届ける、そんな祈りの時間を共に持ちませんか。

Sunflowers are looking up at the sun, smiling.
Just looking at them gives us strength and energy.
A group in Kasaoka City, Okayama prefecture, which is famous for its sunflowers, stood up to strengthen the energy of Tohoku and the rest of Japan.

"We will never forget the disaster. Though we are far apart, there are always things we can do."
Thus, they first handed out sunflower seeds and these seeds eventually bloomed in different places; the seeds that they produced were again distributed to other places. With these seeds, a flower message of the sunflower was sent along.

Its flower language is "We will always watch over you".
In a year and a half, this relay of sunflower seeds spread throughout Tohoku and to the rest of Japan.
This activity, supported by many people, soon became a universal project; in Nevada, USA, the seeds were sent out into the skies by an air balloon.
The seeds were placed inside ping pong balls by children. On each ball, there was a message written by the people involved in the project. In the air balloon, the ping pong balls were carried to the stratosphere, carrying the love from the participants into space.

When the children and adults in Tohoku saw the hot air balloon travel into space, there were cheers.
"We will never forget the smiles of the people there," said one member of the sunflower project. The smiles on the members' faces were as big as the sunflower.

The seeds that travelled to space will bloom in Fukushima this summer. They have survived the tough environment of the stratosphere and they will bloom, with love and hope for Tohoku's recovery.

皆様：

「こころ」は月に一度、東日本大震災の被災者の方々と共に、世界中の人が人種、宗教、国境を越え、祈る会です。今月はＮＹ時間6月10日（日）午後11時＜日本時間11日（月）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。

昨年3月の東日本大震災とその後の福島第1原子力発電所の事故は本当に痛ましいものでした。被災した地域が復興への歩みを進め、大災害から学んだ日本や東北の将来が良い方向に向かって欲しい、被災された方々の心の痛みが少しづつでも和らいでいってくれたら、被災された方々の苦しみが少しづつでも癒えていってくれたら、と強く願っています。

とはいえひとくくりに被災された方と言っても、その苦しみや悲しみは様々でしょう。地震や津波でご家族や家、お友達や仕事、または大切なものを無くされた方と、たとえ命は助かっても地震や津波被害、原発事故後の放射能汚染でふるさとを出なくてはならなった方、小さいお子さんの健康を心配しながらも福島近隣にとどまっている方。大きな心の痛みを抱えられているとはいえ、感じ方はそれぞれ異なるのでしょう。

毎月祈るというこころの活動について、「とても良いことだと思います。祈りというのは立場や環境などを超え、誰にでも送ることができるものですから」と言ってくださった方がいました。今、この瞬間に苦しんでいる方、悲しんでいる方のつらさがほんの少しでも和ぎますように、そのような気持ちで私達は祈ります。被災した方々の心に、ただただ温かく、優しいエネルギーを送るために、ご一緒に祈りませんか。今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間6月10日（日）午後11時＜日本時間11日（月）正午＞です。

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once a month with people from all
over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan. On June
10th at 11 p.m. New York time (11th at 12 p.m. noon in Japan), we ask
you to join us.

The Higashi Nihon Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant
accidents in March 2011 were truly tragic. We hope that reconstruction
in the stricken areas will move forward, that Japan and Tohoku
(northeast Japan) will step toward a brighter future. We strongly
hope that the victims’ pain will ease little by little and their
suffering will heal day by day.

The sorrow and losses experienced by the victims vary. There are
people who lost beloved family members, homes, close friends, jobs or
precious belongings in the quake and tsunami. There are people who
survived but had to leave their hometown due to radioactive
contamination around the Fukushima nuclear plant. There are people who
remained where they were but have to live in fear of radiation
exposure, especially for their children. All must be in a great deal
of pain, but must feel it differently.

"Kokoro" means heart in Japanese. One lady, referring to our monthly
session, said, “It's an absolutely great thing to do because prayers
are for anybody. Prayers can go beyond everything”. We pray for those
who are suffering at this moment. We wish to shoulder some of their
pain even for a little bit. Let us pray together to send our warm and
gentle healing energy to the victims’ hearts. This month, KOKORO will
give prayers on June 10th at 11 p.m. New York time (11th at 12 p.m.
noon in Japan).

５月祈りのお誘いInvitation to our circle of prayer in May

皆様：

「こころ」は、東日本大震災を風化させたくない、亡くなった方々のことを忘れたくない、そんな思いで始まったお祈りの会です。月に一度、日本国内と海外にも呼びかけて、被災者の方々と共に祈りを捧げています。今月はＮＹ時間5月10日（木）午後11時＜日本時間11日（金）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。
 

岩手県沿岸部の美しい三陸海岸に沿って走る三陸鉄道は、地域住民にとっては欠かすことのできない足です。

しかしながら、去年の津波で駅舎や線路が流され、全線107.6キロの殆どが壊滅的な被害を受けてしまいました。

曲がりくねった線路に、土台しか残っていない駅のホーム。

かつてはのどかな景色が広がっていた駅周辺は、見渡す限り瓦礫で埋め尽くされていました。

震災直後のそんな絶望の中で、それでも三陸鉄道の社長が鉄道を何としてでも走らせようと決意したのは、

真っ白な雪が積もった線路を見たときでした。

そこには、被災にあった地元の人たちの足跡が続いていました。

瓦礫の撤去作業が進まず、車も失い、交通手段が全く途絶えてしまった人たちにとって頼みの綱だったのが、高台に何とか残った線路だったのです。

「三陸鉄道は地域の足だ。絶対に走らせるぞ。」

地震後、駅員が一丸となって不眠不休で復旧にあたり、必死になって一部の運転を再開しました。

被災の少ない路線の整備を開始し、震災５日後には一部の運行再開にこぎつきました。

「ありがとう。」ーーー地元の被災者の方々は、そんな駅員達に何度も声をかけました。

「鉄道の復旧が三陸沿岸地域の明日への希望に繋がるんだ。」

2014年の全線復旧に向けて、三陸鉄道の挑戦はこれからも続きます。

そんな三陸鉄道を応援するための切符も販売されました。

切符に書かれた行き先は「復興未来ゆき」、そして切符の有効期限は「あきらめない限り有効」。

たくさんの希望を乗せながら、三陸鉄道は今日も未来に向かって走り続けます。

今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間5月10日（木）午後11時＜日本時間11日（金）正午＞です。

 復興に向かう東北にエールを送る時間を共に持ちませんか。

"Kokoro" is a circle of prayer which started to keep the memory of the March 11th Great East Japan Earthquake and its victims forever in our hearts. On Thursday May 10th at 11 pm New York time, which is Friday 11th at noon in Japan, we ask you to join us.

The Sanriku Railway, which used to run along the beautiful Sanriku coastline of Iwate Prefecture, was an important means of transportation for the locals.  However with last year's tsunami, stations and railways were washed away and most of the 107.6 kilometers tracks suffered catastrophic damages.  

Winding tracks and stations with just the foundations remained.

The once serene landscapes around the stations were now full of debris.

In the midst of desperation right after the earthquake, the thing that moved the president of Sanriku Railway Company to restore the railway was the snow he saw covering the tracks--he saw footsteps of the local people continuing along the tracks for miles and miles.

With people without cars and the transportation coming to a dead halt because of the debris yet to be removed, the only hope for the people was the railway.

"Sanriku Railway is an important means of transportation for the local people. We're definitely going to run the trains again," said he.

After the earthquake, all the railway workers worked as one and toiled day and night to restore the railway; part of the service was back in operation. Starting with the restoration of the tracks that were least damaged, they were able to operate limited sections just 5 days after the earthquake. 

The locals called to railway workers again and again to thank them.  

"The restoration of the railway leads to hope for the Sanriku coastal area," they said.

Aiming for a full restoration in the year 2014, the challenge of the Sanriku Railway continues.  

To support the Sanriku Railway, special tickets are being sold.

The destination on the ticket says, "To restoration, to the future" and the expiration date is, "Valid as long as you don't give up."

Carrying everyone's dream, the Sanriku Railway will keep on running.

This month, "Kokoro" will hold the prayer on Thursday May10th at 11 pm New York time, which is Friday 11th at noon in Japan.

 「こころ」は月に一度、世界中の人が人種、宗教、国境を越え、東日本大震災の被災者の方々と共に祈る会です。今月はＮＹ時間4月10日（火）午後11時＜日本時間11日（水）正午＞に一斉に祈りを捧げます。どうか、お時間が合えば参加してください。お時間が合わない方も、どうかこの日に共に祈りを捧げましょう。

ニューヨークで、東北で地震や津波の被害のひどかった南三陸町に、被災した方々のこころのケアをするボランティアに行かれた臨床心理士の方のお話を聞く集いがありました。そこで参加者からこんな質問が出ました。「頑張って」というのは、被災してすでに身も心も疲れきっている方々に対して、さらに努力しろということで、言っていいのだろうかと。

そこに居た別の臨床心理士の方はこれに対し、日本語の「頑張る」という言葉は言葉通りの「励ます」というニュアンスだけでなく、「思いやる」という意味も含んでいると答えられていました。被災した方々に「寄り添う」気持ちを強く持ってさえいれば、支援したいという気持ちは通じるのですと。 

災害後のこころのケアには長い期間を要するようです。2004年の中越地震では、被害にあった方が心の痛みから立ち直れずに、5年以上たった後に命を絶たれるというケースもあったということです。

こころの活動は、現地に行って面と向かってお話を聞いて、力になるという直接的なものではありません。でも私達一人一人が、傷ついている方々の心に真に寄り添うつもりで祈り続ければ、その癒しのエネルギーは必ず何らかのかたちで届くと信じています。

今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間4月10日（火）午後11時＜日本時間11日（水）正午＞です。被災した方々のふんばりや、被災地でボランティアや支援活動をされている方々の懸命な取り組みを思うと、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになります。寄り添う気持ちと感謝の気持ちを持って、ご一緒に祈りませんか。

In New York City, there was a gathering to hear stories from a volunteer clinical social worker who worked in Minami-Sanriku-cho, a town which was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami. One of the participants asked:  "Is it all right  to say to the victims, `gambatte?`(a word meaning ‘hang in there, you can get through this’ ) Since the victims of the disaster areas are mentally and physically worn out, I hesitate to use that word because it sounds as if you're telling them to work harder. "　 Another clinical social worker responded. "The word ‘gambatte’ does mean ‘hang in there’ but it also includes feelings of compassion.  If you have the heart to stand by the victims, then our wish to offer support will reach the people."

It is said that long term psychological support for the quake victims is needed.  After the Mid-Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004, there was a case where one of the victims could not heal the emotional pain and committed suicide after 5 years.

Kokoro's activity may not work directly with the victims, such as going over to the affected areas and talking with the people face to face, however, if each of us continues to pray with all our hearts and stand by these victims every month, we believe that our healing energy will reach these people in some form or another.

This month, KOKORO will give prayers on April 10th at 11 p.m. New York time (11th at 12 p.m. noon in Japan). We are deeply moved by the efforts made by the victims, the volunteer groups, and those who are engaged in victim support activities.  Let us pray together with a thankful heart and stand by the people of Tohoku.

問題が山積みで、時折心が折れそうになりますが、そんな時は

この震災は、「誰かに」起きたことではありません

「私たちみんなに」起きたことなんです。

" KOKORO" began the circle of prayer for the Great East Japan Earthquake victims in order to prevent the memory of this tragic event and the havoc it created for its victims to fade with time. Every month, we ask people, not only in Japan but all over the world, to take a moment to join us in our prayer. This month, since it is the one year anniversary, we are changing the time in New York to March 11th 12:46 a.m. which is 2:46 pm in Japan,--the time when the earth quake hit the Tohoku area.

We Shall Never Forget March 11th,  2011, 2:46 p.m.

We will never forget the fact :

that so many people have lost their lives,

that so many people are missing even to this day,

although it is now altered,

that there was scenery that people were used to seeing:

the towns in which they lived,

the roads they used to take,

the ever continuing tranquil rice fields....

And we will never forget that there were dreams and wishes that were never fulfilled.

We are going to live our lives to the fullest for those who have left us.

So please, watch over us.

We will work together to get through the present hardships.

So please, support us.

With endless issues mounting, our motivation at times, fails us.

At times like this, we will think about you, and the families that were left behind.

This catastrophe did not only  happen to "someone".

It happened to  all of us. 

 "We shall never forget you."

岩手県の仮設住宅を無料で巡回する「カラオケカー」がテレビに映っていました。みんながとびきりの笑顔で、とても楽しそうに歌っていました。

花巻市では、震災後少年少女のオーケストラが誕生しました。小中学生95人が日々練習に励んでいる姿を写真で見ました。みんな生き生きと、本当にいい顔をしていました。

石巻市の漁港にボランティアに行っている友達がメールをくれました。「漁師のおっちゃん、めっちゃ元気やねん。一緒にいるだけでこっちが元気になる。ほんま、東北の人って本当によく働く…感動するよ、あの働きっぷり。」

宮城県では仙台イチゴが販売されました。震災で大打撃を受けたイチゴ農家でしたが、見事に復活。大粒の、まぶしいほど赤い色をしたイチゴ。それを食べた友人が、こうつぶやきました。「これは復活の味、希望の味だ。」

福島のいわき市では双葉町から避難している人たちによって伝統のダルマ市が開かれました。ふるさとの伝統行事にたくさんの人が集まり、大にぎわいでした。復興（復幸）を願うこのお祭りでは、みこしを担いだ若者が「ふるさと双葉、未来へつなげろ」の大きな掛け声とともに仮設住宅を練り歩きました。

被災地の復興力と前向きな強いエネルギーに、支援する側のわたしたちが逆に励まされているように思い、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになりました。

私たちは皆繋がっています。

日常にある小さな奇跡に気づき，感謝の気持ちを忘れないように過ごし、そして元気でいること... これも私たちができる復興に向けての大切な手助けの一つのように思います。今月の「こころ」は、ＮＹ時間2月10日（金）午後10時＜日本時間11日（土）正午＞です。今月は、被災地で元気に頑張っている方々に「ありがとう」の気持ちを込めて、皆で祈りを捧げませんか。このお知らせは、どうぞご自由に転送して下さい。

We saw on television about a free "karaoke car" that goes around the temporary housings in Iwate prefecture. Everyone was having a good time-- their faces were beaming.

In Hanamaki, a boys' and girls' orchestra was formed after the earthquake. There were photos of 95 elementary and middle school students who practice every day. They looked animated and full of life.

A friend, who goes to a fishing harbor in Ishinomaki to do a volunteer work, sent me this email. "You wouldn't believe how lively these fishermen are-- you get energized just spending time with them. The people of Tohoku are such hard workers. I'm deeply touched with their diligence."

In Miyagi prefecture, strawberries from Sendai were being sold. After the earthquake, the strawberry farms took a beating, but now they have recovered. The strawberries are red, ripe, and large. A friend who ate them said, "It was the taste of reconstruction, the taste of hope."

In Iwaki, Fukushima, the traditional "Daruma-Doll Fair" was held by the people who evacuated from the town of Futaba. The festival was bustling with people who came to see the traditional event. Wishing for the recovery of Tohoku, young people carried the "mikoshi"(portable shrine) around the temporary housings, shouting "For Futaba-cho, for the future!"

This month, "Kokoro" will hold the prayer on Friday February 10th at 10pm New York time (Saturday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan). 去年の12月、日本から遠く離れたNYで、福島復興支援のキャンドルナイトイベントが行われました。Blue Sky Project実行委員会主催のこのイベントには、日本の復興を願う多くの人が集まりました。その中には、日本の被災者の方々の姿もありました。福島から届いた会津伝統工芸の絵ろうそくに火が灯され、皆で福島復興を祈願する歌を歌いました。“We love you, 福島…”  -------- たくさんの人たちの歌声が、凍えそうな夜空に温かく響き渡りました。みんなの歌声と復興への思いが重なりました。予定通りの歌を全て歌い終わっても誰もその場を離れようとせず、合唱はまた繰り返されました。皆の思いは一つになっていました。

このキャンドルナイトイベントで使われた会津伝統工芸の絵ろうそくには、福島で被災に遭った子供たちの願いが書き込んでありました。「友達に会いたい」、「早く自分の家に帰りたい」…。でも、メッセージはそれだけではありませんでした。「支援をありがとう」、「世界が平和になりますように」、「皆が幸せになりますように」…これも、被災地から届いたメッセージでした。

昨年の「こころ」では、たくさんの人の被災地への思いを伝えてきました。今年は、被災地が皆で苦難を乗り越え、一丸となって復興に向けて取り組むその元気な姿も、出来る限り多くの人に伝えていきたいと思っています。皆の心にともったキャンドルの光を、決して絶やすことのないように。

“Kokoro” holds a circle of prayer once every month with people from all over the world and people from the afflicted areas in Japan. On Tuesday January 10th at 10pm New York time (Wednesday the 11th at 12:00 noon in Japan), we ask you to join us.

Last December, there was a candlelight vigil held in New York to support Fukushima’s reconstruction effort. At the event, hosted by the Blue Sky Project committee, many people who wished for Japan’s recovery gathered. Among them were the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake. For this event, painted candles, which are traditional crafts known from Aizu region of Fukushima, were sent from Fukushima. After the candles were lit, people sang songs, including, “I Love You & I Need You Fukushima,” praying for the reconstruction of the area. The supporter’s singing could be heard reverberating in the cold night sky. Everyone’s voice and the wish for Japan’s recovery were united. Even after all the songs had been sung, no one wanted to leave, and the singing continued. People’s hearts became one.

The painted candles used in the event all had messages written by children who were affected by the disaster in Fukushima: “I want to see my friends again,” “I want to go home.”  There were other messages:  “Thank you for your support,” “I wish for world peace,” “I wish for everyone’s happiness” -- these were also messages from the disaster-stricken region.

Last year, Kokoro conveyed many people’s thoughts about the afflicted areas. This year, we would also like to shed light on the courageous spirit and the efforts of the people of Tohoku, as they work together to rebuild their lives. May the flame of the candle continue to burn in our hearts.

This month, “Kokoro” will hold a prayer on Tuesday January 10th at 10pm New York time (Wednesday 11th at noon, Japanese time).
